Hemispheric asymmetry of the afternoon electron aurora

چکیده
[1] Using ultraviolet images from two global auroral imagers, IMAGE FUV in the northern hemisphere and Polar UVI in the south, we present the first synoptic scale conjugate observations of the dayside aurora. We find that the morphology of the afternoon aurora is significantly different in the two hemispheres. Multiple spots in a ‘‘string of pearls’’ configuration are seen in the southern hemisphere while the northern aurora is unstructured. We relate the observed asymmetry in the aurora to the Y GSM component of the IMF: a strong IMF BY modifies the ionospheric convection and field aligned current patterns, leading to the auroral asymmetry. Additionally, we suggest that the instability giving rise to the multiple spot morphology occurs at low altitude. Citation: Fillingim, M. O., G. K. Parks, H. U. Frey, T. J. Immel, and S. B. Asymmetry of Hemispheric Network Topology Reveals Dissociable Processes between Functional and Structural Brain Connectome in Community-Living Elders
Human brain is structurally and functionally asymmetrical and the asymmetries of brain phenotypes have been shown to change in normal aging. Recent advances in graph theoretical analysis have showed topological lateralization between hemispheric networks in the human brain throughout the lifespan. Nevertheless, apparent discrepancies of hemispheric asymmetry were reported between the structural...
متن کاملDayside Red Auroras at Very High latitudes: The Importance of Thermal Excitation
Extensive radar observations have been made from Sondrestrom of the F region in the daytime sector between 70 and 79 ø A. Regions of enhanced electron temperature and electron density are found in close association with the velocity reversal in the morning and afternoon convection cells. From the radar measurements, calculations are made of the contributions to the atomic oxygen emission at 630...
متن کامل1 Hemispheric Asymmetry for Components of Visual Information Processing
The left and right cerebral hemispheres of humans do not handle all aspects of visual information processing with equal ability. Instead, each hemisphere is better able than its partner to handle certain components of processing. Although there continues to be uncertainly surrounding exactly what the relevant components are, it has proved useful to decompose tasks into those processing componen...

Asymmetric features of various physical quantities in the normal and superconducting states between hole- and electron-doped cuprate high-temperature superconductors have been an issue of debate for a long time. Their exploration is very important for the understanding not only of the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity but also of the nature of doped-Mott insulators. Presented in this rev...
متن کاملThe Abnormality of Topological Asymmetry between Hemispheric Brain White Matter Networks in Alzheimer’s Disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment
A large number of morphology-based studies have previously reported a variety of regional abnormalities in hemispheric asymmetry in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recently, neuroimaging studies have revealed changes in the topological organization of the structural network in AD. However, little is known about the alterations in topological asymmetries. In the present study, we used diffusion tensor...
